Who we are

Flagstaff Community Exploration is rooted in the belief that children thrive when learning grows directly from the places they inhabit and the relationships they build within their community. Our programs center local landscapes, histories, cultures, and people as the primary curriculum, inviting students to learn through direct experience, curiosity, and connection. By engaging with their environment and the individuals who shape it, children develop a deep sense of belonging, responsibility, and awareness of their role within the community.

Relational learning is woven into every aspect of our approach. Students learn alongside peers, educators, families, and community partners, building trust, empathy, and collaborative problem‐solving skills. We prioritize dialogue, shared inquiry, and collective meaning‐making, helping children understand themselves in relation to others and to the broader systems that shape their daily lives.

Within this place‐based and relational framework, the arts serve as a vital mode of inquiry through which students reflect and express themselves. Students use a range of artistic media to observe, interpret, and communicate what they discover in the world around them. Artmaking is valued as a meaningful practice in its own right, while also serving as a way for students to process experiences, explore perspectives, and express understanding in relationship to place and community.

A typical day in our programs blends exploration, conversation, and creative response. Students might begin with a question rooted in the local environment, followed by time spent outdoors, visits with community members, or investigations of natural and built spaces. These experiences lead into opportunities for students to express their insights through drawing, painting, sculpture, or mixed media, using art to deepen and articulate their learning.

Throughout the day, educators guide students in reflecting on their experiences, sharing ideas, and learning from one another. Children are encouraged to follow their curiosity, collaborate with peers, and make personal connections between their lived experiences and the community they call home. Families often share that this approach fosters stronger engagement, deeper understanding, and a growing sense of agency in their children.

Flagstaff Community Exploration offers an educational environment where place and relationships are the foundation of learning, and the arts enrich and extend that work. Through this integrated approach, students experience learning as relevant, joyful, and deeply connected to the world around them.

Future Plans

We believe community-centered education thrives when it is both thoughtfully supported and deeply reflective. Looking ahead, Flagstaff Community Exploration is working toward long-term sustainability and wider access to our classes.

This includes applying for grants, collaborating with Northern Arizona University’s Department of Education on research that explores the value of place-based and creative learning, and beginning the process of forming a foundation that will help fund FCE classes. Each step is rooted in our commitment to keeping learning joyful, accessible, and connected to the Flagstaff community.
